Natural Materials Masterclass: Straw | ACAN |

Описание: An evening with experts in straw construction with a showcase of the material in action including case studies and a virtual site visit.



Following on from our Introduction to Natural Materials event, in this first material-focused evening we hear from a panel of experts the many different forms and roles that straw can play in construction, and the many benefits and opportunities it can bring.



Learn from industry leaders championing straw as an important natural construction material, see a showcase of case studies and even visit a live construction site using straw.


Speakers include:



05:11 🌾 Barbara Jones is the founder of Straw Works (now Wellspring Architecture) and the School of Natural Building. A trained carpenter and joiner as well as an expert in straw construction, she is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts; was awarded both a Lifetime Achievement Award from Women in Construction and the UKRC's Woman of Outstanding Achievement Award.



21:29 🌾 Craig White is a developer, architect and entrepreneur. He is a Founding Director at of ModCell and White Design and CEO of Agile Property & Homes.


47:09 🌾 Cypren Edmunds is a community activist and campaigner, communications officer at the Sustainable Traditional Building Alliance and Straw-bale Building UK.



01:02:42 🌾 John Butler is a sustainable building consultant, bringing hands-on experience of retrofit and new-build, combined with technical and theoretical knowledge of materials, thermal comfort, building physics, and environmental impact of construction


01:15:30 🌾Phil Christopher is a straw bale builder and keen environmentalist. He designs, specifies, builds, engages, trains and consults in natural building and is director of Huff and Puff Construction.


01:28:51 🌾 Dana Olărescu is an interdisciplinary artist driven by social justice, environmental psychology, and ecofeminism, working between the boundaries of art and design. She recently lead on constructing a new straw-bale ecological outdoor classroom for the May Project, self-built with a group of unaccompanied Eritrean refugee minors.



01:42:56 🌾 Joe Duirwyn is a natural builder and co-founder of Hartwyn, established to provide the best Design and Build assistance available for Natural Self-Builders, and is on site right now building with straw.

We also acknowledge that the built environment is a major contributing factor to the climate crisis and as such requires complete and rapid transformation (which we are yet to witness).

We can no longer remain secluded within personal and professional silos and instead must harness our agency as citizens with shared professional backgrounds to bring about the necessary changes to our industry. As a network of individuals, ACAN is able to act at speed, without conflict of interest, and is open to methods that may be unavailable to other campaign organisations.
