In this video, I explain HDOP, VDOP, and PDOP in simple and easy-to-understand language, especially for drone pilots, embedded engineers, and GPS beginners.
Many times we see terms like HDOP, VDOP, and PDOP in GPS modules, flight controllers, or ground control software —
but most people don’t really know what they mean and how they affect drone flying.
GPS works using satellites in the sky.
Your GPS receiver — in a drone or phone —
listens to signals from multiple satellites and calculates:
Latitude
Longitude
Altitude
Time
But GPS accuracy does not depend only on the number of satellites.
It also depends on:
👉 Where those satellites are positioned in the sky
This is where DOP comes in.
DOP means Dilution of Precision.
In simple words:
DOP tells us how good or bad the satellite geometry is
Think like this 👇
If satellites are:
Spread nicely across the sky → Good accuracy
All clustered in one direction → Poor accuracy
Even with many satellites, if their position is bad,
your GPS accuracy will be poor.
📌 Important point:
DOP does NOT measure signal strength.
It measures satellite position geometry.
