These spoken word poetry performances are part of an Advanced Placement English Literature course and reflect the expectations of a college-level classroom. The project asks students to apply advanced literary, rhetorical, and performance skills to original work, using language and structure intentionally to communicate meaning to an audience.
Because spoken word poetry often engages with real-world experiences and complex themes—including identity, social issues, and questions of power and justice—some pieces may address mature topics. All student work follows PG-13 content guidelines, similar to those used in film ratings. This allows for thoughtful exploration of serious ideas while maintaining clear boundaries regarding explicit content, graphic violence, and sexual material.
We believe that when students are given clear expectations and responsible guidance, they are capable of engaging with difficult ideas and complex personal experiences thoughtfully and respectfully. These performances represent academic learning, creative risk-taking, and intentional craft within an educational framework.
