Perhaps one of the things that people remember most now about Edward VIII was that he was sympathetic towards Nazi Germany in the 1930s. Ted Powell, author of King Edward VIII: An American Life, highlights that it’s important to understand that that was not uncommon at the time and partly due to the feeling that Britain must never go to Germany again as the horrors of the First World War where still fresh in people’s mind. Of course this does not excuse Edward’s pro-German feelings at the time but goes some way to explaining them.
