勝負服 is the Japanese word for power suit, lucky shirt, lucky underwear, and the dark indigo of these lucky pants I’m wearing today was the color of samurai power suits.

褐色 Kachi iro was the samurai’s favorite armor color during the Kamakura Period (1185 - 1333). The name came from the method used to make this color—hey pounded dyed cloth using a mortar and pestle.

This method was called 搗つ, and the almost-black-indigo color it produced came to be called 褐色 Kachi iro.

It resonated with the samurai class as Kachi was a homophone with the word 勝ち Kachi - victory.

The color is sometimes written 勝色 Kachiiro today- the victory color, and it is also the color of Japan’s national soccer team.
