Описание: 📍 The Asterousia Mountains stretch across the southern edge of Heraklion in Crete, forming Greece’s southernmost mountain range.

Though not particularly high—peaking at just 1,231 meters—these mountains are rugged, wild, and striking. Sparse vegetation, deep gorges, and steep cliffs dominate the landscape. Goats graze freely, and sharp rocks lead directly into the South Cretan Sea, creating one of the most unusual natural settings in Europe.

Exploring Asterousia starts from the east in Tsoutsouras or Mesochori, with highlights like the Monastery of Saint Nikitas and the palm grove of Saint Anthony. From there, travelers can walk to Maridaki or take a challenging drive through Achentrias Gorge. In the west, Paranymfi offers access to Tris Ekklisies and the impressive Ambas waterfall, home to the largest insular colony of birds of prey in Europe. 🦅

⛰️ The road to the Koudoumas Monastery, near the summit of Kofinas, offers stunning views and access to Agios Ioannis and the cave of Saint Anthony. Further west, the gorge of Tripiti, the beaches of Chrysostomos and Kali Limenes, and the cliff-lined paths near Cape Lithino reveal the region’s untamed side. Agiofarago Gorge, accessible from the historic Hodeghetria Monastery, leads to hidden ascetic caves and the remote beach of Martsalo.

The route ends near Matala and the Red Beach—hard-to-reach spots with deep cultural roots. In between, visitors pass through sacred sites, natural wonders, and villages where time seems to stand still. From mythology to monastic life, the Asterousia range tells a different story of Crete—far from the well-trodden paths.
