A Thermal Fiber Stripper is a specialized tool used in fiber optic preparation to remove the protective buffer and coating from optical fibers using heat. Unlike manual mechanical strippers, which rely purely on blade force, thermal strippers use a heating element to soften the material before stripping it away.
This method is preferred for high-precision tasks like fusion splicing, as it significantly reduces the risk of creating micro-cracks or "nicks" on the glass cladding.
How It Works
Heating: The fiber is placed into a small "oven" or heating channel.
Softening: Adjustable temperature settings (typically between 60°C and 200°C) heat the acrylate or PVC coating until it becomes soft and pliable.
Stripping: Integrated blades score the softened coating. Because the material is soft, the stripping force required is minimal, allowing the coating to slide off cleanly.
Key Features
Precision: Prevents the blade from making direct contact with the glass fiber, preserving its tensile strength (often exceeding 20 N).
Versatility: Most models can handle both single fibers (250µm/900µm) and ribbon fibers (up to 12 fibers at once).
Adjustable Settings: Users can adjust heating time (usually 3–10 seconds) and temperature based on the specific type of coating.
Portability: Many modern units are handheld and powered by rechargeable Li-ion batteries, making them ideal for field work.
