In this video, we share an adventure we took on the famous Rubicon Trail in the California Sierras.
HERE'S THE RIGS THAT MADE THE TRIP
Timmy's 1st Gen 4runner - dual cases, front & rear lockers, 5 speed trans, and 37" tires
Chris' 3rd Gen 4runner - dual cases, front & rear lockers, auto trans, and 35" tires
Stevo's 3rd Gen 4runner - single case, rear locker, 5 speed trans, and 35" tires
Stevo without the help of dual cases and a front locker had a bit of a disadvantage but he negotiated the trail very well with his setup.
My buddy Wei rode in my 1st Gen and he did a ton of spotting and filming for us. Wei was pretty much the reason we got as much video footage as we did and didn't incur major body damage. Thanks Wei!
If you have been thinking of doing a trip on the Rubicon, I hope this video gave you a decent idea of what it's like to run a trail like this. This is truly a rock crawling trail and it was the first time any of us took on an off-roading challenge like this. To say the least, this was a very challenging experience. No one obstacle is terribly hard. The thing that makes the Rubicon trail hard is the number of obstacles. There's dozens and dozens and dozens of them. The most concentrated number of obstacles are between Loon Lake and Rubicon Springs. The trail gets a bit easier going up Cadillac Hill and gets much easier once you get a little ways past Observation Point.
Happy Rock Crawling!
Timmy & Sean
