There are certain things that you can’t do without a gimbal – and although there already are a number of action cameras that feel pretty well independently, there are a number of use cases where gimbals come handy.
From the budget models, I personally often choose to use the iSteady line – very affordable, and my favorite part is the navigation.
Let’s talk about the Pro 2! The unboxing experience is good – with a well looking box, and as part of the assembly there’s a nice hard case to carry with. In time I figured out that in the case you can put the gimbal in with the action camera attached – which is quite nice and saves a lot of time. Taking the device out – we can see it is plastic – which means lightweight and not too premium. Most of the gimbals for actioncameras rely on plastic design as they only need to lift 50-100 gram heavy devices. And the structure and button placement look identical to the iSteady mobile plus, which has also been reviewed on the channel.
The controls are around the joystick. LED info about the battery status, a few buttons, and on the other side – there’s a trigger button – it switches to sports mode. There are two places where you can add a ¼ inch tripod – and there even is one included in the box. We can also find two cables.
A few words about the technical data – 3-axis stabilization, with powerful brushless motors, splash proof – you can use when it is lightly raining, embedded 3600 mah battery, and WiFi app.
The control modes feature 320 movement when tilting and rolling, and 600 degrees when panning; This is important to know, because we can estimate that the advertised inception mode can offer a little less than two complete cycles.
Concerning mounting an actioncam – supported are most models that look like GoPro – all the GoPro Hero generations, sjcam SJ7 and SJ8 series, YI cams, and so on. The iSteady Pro 2 has the big advantage of being balanced out of the box.
I’ve shot for you a lot of examples – and to me – it looks like a good idea to rely on both – gimbal stabilization and electronic image stabilization, if your camera supports it.
Another cool feature is the integration with SJCAM models – looks like both companies work closely together – and there’s no surprise that the SJCAM gimbal is almost identical to the iSteady Pro 2.
This review was finally a good way for me to test my new set of Freewell filters for DJI Osmo Action and GoPro – because if you use filters – this can make the footage more cinematic, but will reduce the efficiency of the electronic stabilization – so in these situations having a hardware stabilizer is a must. And results were pretty good. A note to the Gopro users – best practice is to enable voice commands – because otherwise, due to the placement of Gopro’s power button – things may get tricky.
At the end – I liked a lot the second generation of iSteady Pro. Guess that makes it a reasonable, and very affordable 3-axis purpose-based gimbal for action cameras.
