When she was launched in 1948, the MS Stockholm was a clash of superlatives, as the largest passenger ship that had ever been built in Sweden, yet the smallest transatlantic liner in service. Despite being a key player in the golden age of transatlantic cruising, her name is often synonymous with tragedy, involved in the first-ever televised maritime disaster when she collided with the Andrea Doria, Italy’s exquisite ‘floating gallery,’ like a dodgem car. But Stockholm’s story is much more than just the collision; hers is a story of repairs, world-firsts, makeovers, and more name changes than Prince. Her career demonstrates that after the dust settles, disaster ships may have a little more life left in them yet. Beating the odds, Stockholm would sail for not another 30 or 50, but another jaw-dropping 77 years. She would continue to inspire awe and affection from admirers and amass a cult following; beloved as the world’s oldest actively sailing passenger liner and cruise ship when she finlly ended her career in the 2020s as the MS Astoria.
A huge thankyou to our friend Peter Knego from @midshipcinema who provided the glorious footage of the Astoria in her final years. Check out his website here for many more rare and unique views from liners and classic cruise ships: https://www.midshipcentury.com/
