President Donald Trump urged Republicans on Monday to try to nationalize voting.
He said during an interview on former FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino’s podcast that Republicans should “take over” voting in more than a dozen places. States, rather than the federal government, run most parts of elections.
“The Republicans should say, ‘We wanna take over.’ We should take over the voting in at least many – 15 places,” Trump asserted. “The Republicans ought to nationalize the voting.”
It’s unclear exactly what the president meant. The White House didn’t answer The National News Desk’s question about his comments on Tuesday.
The Constitution gives states most authority to run elections. Trump claimed in his interview that there are “crooked” states, however, that falsely declared themselves for former President Joe Biden during the 2020 election.
“We have states that are so crooked, and they’re counting votes – we have states that I won that show I didn’t win,” Trump said.
“Like the 2020 election. I won that election by so much. Everybody knows it,” he added.
Trump didn’t win the 2020 election. He lost by over 13% of the electoral vote.
Still, the president has renewed his efforts to obtain evidence that the race was rigged, a claim dating back to the night he was declared the loser. Last week, the FBI raided a Georgia elections office for 2020 ballots in an operation supervised by top administration officials.
