During the brutal August 1942 fighting on Gavutu in the Solomon Islands, Tully used this innovative semi-automatic rifle to eliminate 42 Japanese soldiers at distances up to 800 yards—a feat that earned him the Silver Star and proved the Johnson's deadly effectiveness. While the rifle saw limited official issue, elite Marine units like the Raiders and Paramarines were so impressed with its performance that they began "liberating" these weapons from supply depots whenever possible.
