Playa Santa Maria, which is just 3km west of Guanabo, is now the best beach in the Havana area (Playas del Estes). Guanabo used to be great, but now, due to many storms, the beach in Guanabo is basically gone. You are much better off going to Santa Maria.
The only problem is that there are very few rental properties in Santa Maria. The best option is to book cheap accommodations in the town of Guanabo and then take the 400 or 464 bus, west, to Santa Maria Beach. It's only a 5 minute ride and costs half a peso Moneda Nacional (less than 5 cents USD). You can catch the bus on 5th Avenue in Guanabo. Or you can take a communal taxi (also on 5th Ave, and it would cost 10 pesos (about 50 cents USD) per person.
