This summer, we will be looking at a small group of Psalms known as the Psalms of Ascent. Psalms 120-134. They get their name from the phrase appearing before each Psalm: “a song of ascent.” The Hebrew term is maʿalot which means “going up.”
These Psalms were sung by God's people as they made their way to Jerusalem multiple times a year. The songs provide a roadmap for our journey. They keep us grounded offering sincere insights into life's struggles but also hopeful for our final destination. For the Hebrew pilgrims, Jerusalem was the end. For Christian pilgrims, the end is both becoming like Christ and experiencing God's faithful presence here and for eternity in heaven.
