Sushil Nathaniel was a 58-year-old resident of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, and a branch manager for the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) in Alirajpur. On April 19, 2025, he traveled to Jammu and Kashmir with his wife, Jenifer, daughter, Akanksha, and son, Austin, for a family vacation to celebrate Easter. Tragically, on April 22, 2025, he was killed in a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Anantnag district, which claimed the lives of at least 26-28 tourists, including Sushil. According to reports, terrorists asked him to recite the Islamic Kalma and questioned his religion. When he identified himself as a Christian, he was shot dead. His daughter, Akanksha, sustained a bullet injury to her leg but survived, while his wife and son were unharmed but left in shock.
Sushil’s mortal remains were flown back to Indore on April 23, 2025, via an Air India flight. His last rites were performed on April 24, 2025, in a Christian cemetery in Indore, following prayers and rituals at a church in Nanda Nagar. The funeral was attended by family, friends, and community members, with his wife and daughter, the latter on a wheelchair, visibly devastated. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav met the family at Indore airport, paid his respects, and condemned the attack as a "cowardly act by Pakistan," assuring support for the family and medical care for Akanksha.
Sushil was described as a family guardian, known for his friendly and mature nature, often sought for advice by relatives and friends. His family, originally from Jobat in Alirajpur, had moved to Indore about 30 years ago, residing in Veena Nagar. Relatives expressed grief and demanded strict punishment for the perpetrators, highlighting the brutality of the attack and its impact on their close-knit community. The incident sparked widespread mourning in Indore and condemnation across India, with calls for action against terrorism.
