Hey friends! It’s Debbie from Refresh Restyle. In this cozy live craft, I’m creating a big-impact, budget-friendly winter sign: a reversible chalkboard with a cute snowman cutout and the phrase “You Need To Chill.” This project is beginner-friendly, quick to make, and perfect for winter and Christmas decor, tiered trays, mantels, and farmhouse vignettes.
What we’re making
A large, double-sided chalkboard sign you can erase and reuse
A wooden snowman cutout, base-coated white, chalked with a silkscreen transfer, and hand-painted accents
A snowy splatter finish and a simple twine/ribbon topper for extra charm
Removable placement using glue dots so you can switch the design later
Supplies used
Double-sided “everyday” chalkboard with back hangers (reversible/erasable)
Wood snowman cutout
Silkscreen transfer: snowman + “You Need To Chill”
Chalk paste: white (letters/base), black (snowman details), red (scarf), orange (nose)
Foam daubers (Dollar Tree/Walmart)
Small paintbrushes
Spray bottle with water, paper towels
Plastic scraper or craft scraper; board/magic eraser for cleaning
Low-heat dryer or heat tool
Glue dots or removable adhesive
Baker’s twine and seasonal ribbon
Old toothbrush for snowy paint/paste splatter
Step-by-step highlights
1) Prep: Lightly paint the wood snowman white using a dauber for a fast, even coat. Let dry; add a second coat if needed.
2) Plan layout: Place the snowman near the bottom of the chalkboard and center the phrase in the middle. Use the built-in hangers to orient your design correctly.
3) Chalk the phrase: Apply white chalk paste through the silkscreen transfer. Peel to reveal crisp lettering that dries hard and smudge-resistant.
4) Chalk the snowman: Position the transfer on the painted snowman and squeegee black paste for the outline/details. Peel for that “wow” reveal.
5) Clean your transfer: Mist with water and wipe, or rinse under running water. Use a board/magic eraser to remove paste from the screen. Hold it up to make sure you can see through the mesh—then let it dry sticky-side up.
6) Hand-painted accents: Paint the carrot nose orange, the scarf red (or any color you love), and the hat black. Thin paste or paint slightly with water for smoother brushstrokes.
7) Snowy splatter: Load an old toothbrush with thinned white paste/paint and flick lightly across the board for a snow effect. Dry thoroughly.
8) Assemble: Use a few glue dots to place the snowman at a playful angle so he’s removable. Wrap baker’s twine and add a small ribbon bow to finish.
Tips and tricks
Removable decor: Glue dots make the snowman easy to pry off when you’re ready to update your board for the next season.
Reusable surface: To erase chalk paste later, mist with water, let sit a minute, and scrape/wipe clean with a plastic scraper and board eraser.
Transfer alignment: Transparent silkscreen transfers make it easy to see placement—great for centering phrases or layering details.
Paste consistency: If paste feels thick, a drop or two of water and a quick stir makes it glide like a dream.
Frame flair: The wood frame can be painted or striped for extra personality—think candy cane stripes or buffalo check!
