Synapsis 2, yes, I know its been almost 3 years since I said I’d make the sequel but its finally out. The main reason why its taken so long is the first one was such a complete mind bending experience, and not just in the game play. It was one of the first games I coded and I didn’t actually really plan much of the game out, I dived into it without a plan and kind of worked on it until it all came together. Which made the development process into a 9 month super slog.
It’s one of the games I’m most proud of as I really achieved what I set out with the game, but I really didn’t fancy spending another 9 months making a new one, I’d probably be homeless by the end of it. Which is when I stated talking to Rob Donkin about it, we’d done several other adventure games together, Dreamers, Panda’s big adventure so we kind of new how to plan it out a little better. I had a pretty good idea on what I wanted visually and how the story pans out, so we set about coming up with how it all comes together while we finished off Animal Raceway. We pretty much planned out the entire game this time before starting anything, Rob also took a break to work on some other games while I made a start on sketching up all the artwork on paper and getting resource images for inspiration of what it was going to look like.
I pretty much spent an evening every night for 2 weeks modelling up the 8 locations we had, they really were surprisingly quick to model when I knew what I was doing from the start, by this time I’d got renders together and Rob made a start on hooking them all together with placeholders for all the objects, so you could pretty much play through from start to finish.
It was then a case of animating objects and splitting up the items which were animated and you could pick up from those which are just background scenery, this was a fairly time consuming job as I had to create mattes so the shadows on moving objects still worked, which took a fair amount of time. I also spent a while collecting sounds and music together, luckily I had come across London Sound Survey while making Gone to the dogs which was pretty useful and I also had an email from Dave Greening who makes some rather nice piano music which has featured on a number of other games on Kongregate. He liked my games and wanted to know if I’d like to use his music which was an offer which sounded great to me, I worked a piano into one of the rooms to make it fit as the track he had was perfect.
Hopefully when I do part 3, the concluding part it wont be in 3 years time, but for now have a go at the sequel.
I’ve uploaded a walkthrough if you get stuck.
