This is the 4th of July Liberty Weekend fireworks display, with Ronald Reagan giving a speech beforehand. Liberty Weekend was a four-day celebration held to mark the 1984–86 restoration and the centenary of the Statue of Liberty in New York City. It began on July 3, 1986, and ended on July 6. The Opening Ceremonies of Liberty Weekend were held on July 3, 1986, at Governors Island in New York Harbor. Warren Burger, Chief Justice of the United States, swore in immigrants to the United States in a naturalization ceremony on Ellis Island, while 44 locations around the country simultaneously performed ceremonies.
This VHS tape was found at an estate sale. The tape contained both the opening ceremonies as well as the 4th of July celebration. This is the 4th of July portion, with Ronald Reagan giving a speech before the fireworks display.
Some of this may not have aged well, especially the Twin Towers featured numerous times framing the fireworks, so heads up on that, but this is an interesting moment in our history and worth preserving, especially adding to the previous video of the celebrations on the 3rd where we as a country actually celebrated immigrants.
