Since the classical period, philosophers and physicians have reinforced the idea that man's nature consists of four humours, and that the properties of each of these humours correspond to each of the four seasons, each of them predominating in the season that shares the same nature: blood, hot and humid, predominates in spring; yellow bile, hot and dry, in summer; black bile, cold and dry, in autumn; and phlegm, cold and humid, in winter. Good health is defined as the balance and mixture of the humours, while their imbalance and separation are the cause of the disease. To avoid this imbalance, it was recommended to modify the regime according to the seasons.
The predominance of humours varies not only according to the seasons but also according to age.
