The infantry called it a "Coffin on Tracks" and laughed at its thin armor. Then the M-19 rolled up to Sugar Loaf Hill and did what the heavy tanks couldn't.
The Problem: The M-19 Gun Motor Carriage was a "Paper Tank" designed to shoot down airplanes, not fight a ground war. With an open-topped turret and armor so thin a rifle bullet could punch through it, experts considered it "useless" for the brutal, close-quarters cave warfare of Okinawa. Logistics officers even threatened to cut their fuel, seeing the vehicle as a relic of a bygone air war rather than a frontline asset.
The Risk: To prove the experts wrong, Sergeant Miller had to take his crew into the "Dead Zone." They drove the unarmored vehicle directly to the base of the enemy-held cliffs—point-blank range—so they could elevate their guns almost 90 degrees straight up. This suicide run left the crew completely exposed to sniper fire and grenades, relying on speed and the terrifying rate of fire of their twin cannons to survive.
✅In this video, we uncover:
-The "Vertical War" tactic that allowed a rejected anti-aircraft gun to destroy the Japanese fortress "The Pinnacle."
-How the relentless "Pomp-Pomp-Pomp" of the Twin 40mm Bofors psychologically broke the enemy defenders.
-The "Snip" maneuver: A precision demolition technique that turned the M-19 into the deadliest sniper rifle of the Pacific War.
-The Enemy Mocked His "Open Top" Target — Until He Turned The Sky Gun Level
