Recently, the United States announced a temporary waiver allowing India to buy Russian oil, even though Russian oil exports are under Western sanctions because of the Russia-Ukraine war. The decision came in early March 2026 during a period of rising tensions and conflict in the Middle East.
The U.S. Treasury Department issued a 30-day waiver that permits Indian refiners to purchase Russian crude oil that was already loaded on ships and “stranded at sea.” The waiver is valid until April 4, 2026.
One major reason for the decision is the global energy crisis caused by conflict in the Middle East, especially disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route for oil. Because of this instability, oil supplies became uncertain and prices began rising rapidly. The U.S. allowed the temporary purchase so that oil would continue flowing to global markets and prevent severe price spikes.
India depends heavily on imported crude oil and quickly increased purchases of Russian oil to avoid shortages. Reports said Indian refiners bought millions of barrels of Russian crude to compensate for disrupted Middle East supplies.
However, Indian officials also clarified that India does not need “permission” from any country to buy oil, saying the waiver only removes legal complications related to U.S. sanctions. India continues to buy oil based on price and supply needs.
