Experts note that the site of Gönnersdorf is one of the most ancient and richest sites from the Ice Age in Europe. The site is known for its array of prehistoric art, consisting of 406 engraved slabs or plaquettes, and has been keenly pursued by archaeologists for decades.
Among these plaquettes are several engravings portraying wild horses, rhinoceroses, reindeer and mammoths. Along with these, figures of stylized female human silhouettes feature on some engravings.
Leveraging RTI, a photographic technology that captures fine surface details of a subject, researchers discovered images of fish surrounded by grid-like patterns on eight of the schist slabs.
"The central location of the fish, within grid lines which clearly overlay them and exceed them in size, strongly suggests that the grids represent a form of container—a net or trap—into which the fish have become enmeshed," said Dr Monica Spicker, lead author of the study and a researcher at Monrepos Archaeological Research Center.
The grid lines layered over the fish motifs suggest an intentional design. This may symbolize the process of fishing rather than just showing fish.
