The sides cut by Sam Lanin’s Orchestra as “The Broadway Broadcasters” on Cameo Records offer an interesting mix of straight ahead dance band playing, and hot and creative arrangements. In particular, the 1925-1926 sides provide some fun, bouncy, and chugging playing with a hot rhythm section driving a persistent Fox-Trot groove–it’s easy to see why this band was so favored by dancers at the Roseland ballroom. When not playing at the Roseland, his roster of first class musicians canned consistently hot sides of consistently high quality for almost every label. In fact, he often recorded the same song for different companies using the same arrangement and the same if not similar musicians. Such is the case of “If I Had a Girl Like You,” which Lanin recorded for several companies. In addition to the Columbia and Plaza versions, Lanin cut a fantastic version for Cameo, which is probably the best version the band cut. Red Nichols’ muted solo and hot break are especially enjoyable.
