Niwaki in Switzerland - autumn work on Pinus Parviflora - montage

Описание: The Japanese term "momiage" refers to thinning out pines in the autumn. This is what I want to demonstrate with this video. I don't need to remove much since I do this regularly. If you neglect it and do it less frequently, it might be necessary to cut more. Today, I’m thinning a white pine (Pinus parviflora), which I pruned heavily in the spring. I cut the longest shoots left after the spring pruning. I shape the contour of the branches the way I want them and remove old needles. I like having space between the branches and creating an exciting, three-dimensional asymmetrical form, with all the branches at different heights. This is, of course, individual and up to personal creativity. The real charm of Niwaki is shaping the trees yourself.

Too many people buy less attractive but expensive ball-shaped trees at garden centers and let them grow out of shape. Some cut pines with hedge trimmers when they start to look unkempt in the summer. This often results in branches drying out and dying due to lack of light because all the new shoots remain, and the branches become denser until they die.

All the trees on our property in Switzerland were planted after 2020, as we moved here then, and there were no trees on the plot. In agreement with the buyer of our old house, I dug up eight medium-sized pines in 2020, which I had planted and shaped myself over 15 years. I started with forgotten balcony plants or wild, unwanted trees growing in the wrong place, which I could dig up. I replanted my trees in Hermiswil in the winter and spring of 2021, and all have survived. I also planted half of my potted bonsais here in Switzerland, though one died (which is included in this film). Some were brought to Sweden and planted there. They are alive and featured in other films.
