Melee @ Verdugo West #284, the final iteration of the local series “Melee @ Verdugo West” started by Dendypretendy on February 21st 2018. This local quickly became something special to so many people, resulting in being one of the longest running Super Smash Bros. Melee locals, ever. In 2021, Kevon and schmoop took over the role of rallying everyone to Trustworthy Brewing Co on Monday nights. For weeks on end, countless new, and familiar faces would gather to share the joy of Super Smash Bros. Melee. More importantly, people would gather around to share their time together, every week. Countless stories I can recall, from the time we ran Super Verdugo without a cap and learned the importance of entrance caps, the week where we had to go my house to play grands because the venue told us we had to be out by 11 because we stayed so late at Super Verdugo, the time the venue flooded from the rain, seeing Fictions 48 week win streak, null defeating Fiction to end the win streak while he was weeks away from winning Verdugo for a year straight, Verdugo #200 that had an $1000 pot bonus paid out to Top 8 with the help of Aiden and slime, where we gave away 2 in10city phob controllers, yard merch, had easily 200+ people in the building, and so many more specific memories I’m not mentioning. So many people that would come for the bracket but just end up helping out with the event such as void star, in10city, Georgie, Tern, Charlatan, Chris, Sean, shipsee and so many more I’m forgetting to mention. It was always so crazy to me seeing the amount of people that would attend this specific tournament from such far locations, weekly. The Temecula carpool, the SD carpool, all the OC people, the Cencal carpool we had that one time, and all the people we’d get from different countries. This tournament was something so unexplainably special to me when I myself was an attendee, and it was somehow also becoming that for other people in front of my eyes. When you ask people what made this tournament special, you’d receive such different answers. I myself can’t necessarily put into words why this tournament was so special, but anyone who attended a Verdugo would say that you had to have been there.
