Kolkata–Guangzhou Flights Return After 5 Years | India–China Reconnect Amid Thawing Relations

Описание: After a gap of five years, direct air connectivity between India and China has finally resumed, with IndiGo’s Kolkata–Guangzhou flight taking off on Sunday carrying 176 passengers. The route had been suspended since 2020 following COVID-19 restrictions and diplomatic tensions after the border clashes.

Passengers expressed relief as the flight dramatically cuts travel time and cost compared to the longer detours via Delhi or Bangkok. The move follows the reopening of tourist visas for Chinese nationals and diplomatic discussions led by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri earlier this year.

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to China in August, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to partnership and connectivity. IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers said the restored flights will strengthen the “flow of people, goods, and ideas” between two global economic giants. With China Eastern Airlines also resuming its India routes, bilateral ties appear to be on the mend.
