Sir Charles Napier (1782-1853) is one of two army officers commemorated in Trafalgar Square in London. When he was mayor of London, Ken Livingstone said that he hadn't a clue who either were. In this video, I introduce Napier and explore the reasons why Victorian society commemorated him with a statue in London's biggest and grandest public square. I then ask how we should understand the statue today.
