STORYLINE:
Yukiya Amano, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), arrived back in Vienna from Japan on Saturday evening.
He told reporters that he had met Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan and other officials in order to discuss the problems at Japan's tsunami-crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant.
"I requested them to further increase the amount and quality of information. For specific measures I left the ex-pat team for the measurement of the environment and I understand new data coming to our headquarters in Vienna," Amano said.
Amano stressed that it was difficult to give a status update because he didn't have the latest information.
Japan on Saturday said that radiation levels in spinach and milk from farms near the Fukushima Dai-ichi complex exceeded government safety limits.
Meanwhile, firefighters pumped water directly from the sea into one of the most troubled areas of the nuclear plant and prepared to try to restore power to its automatic cooling systems.
Workers were making the final preparations to turn on the electricity on Sunday, but it was unclear if the cooling systems would still work.
Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said conditions at Units 1, 2 and 3 - which have been rocked by explosions in the past eight days - had "stabilised".
Amano will brief the IAEA's 35-nation board in an emergency session on Monday.
