The Internet of Things is a vast landscape of billions of devices connected to the Internet performing a wide variety of critical tasks such as ensuring automotive safety, monitoring building environmental systems, or managing the electric grid. While the Internet of Things holds promise across vertical markets, its unprecedented scale and the requirement to execute tasks reliably makes it vital that the devices be strongly secured. This talk presents constraints encountered when securing these devices such as limited network bandwidth, limited memory, and low power which make them harder to secure. To solve those issues, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) has defined a profile of Internet security standards designed to specifically address these limitations. By incorporating security standards when a product is initially offered in the marketplace, it is more likely to behave the way we expect, with a lower risk of exposing sensitive data.
Presented at the Illinois Institute of Technology Real-Time Communications Conference 2016.
