Welcome to my seminar on ARM M-class CPUs! In this short educational course, I dive into the world of ARM architecture, focusing specifically on the M-class of CPUs. In this video, I introduce ARM as a company and explain their unique business model—designing CPU architectures rather than manufacturing chips. I’ll walk you through how ARM licenses its architectures to semiconductor companies like NXP, TI, and STM, who then implement and manufacture the CPUs.
I’ll explore the three main ARM processor classes: A-class (Application-grade processors for running operating systems like Linux, macOS, or Windows, as seen in Apple’s M1/M2/M3 SoCs), R-class (Real-time systems CPUs for deterministic applications like engine control units), and M-class (Microcontroller-based CPUs for embedded systems). This video focuses on the M-class CPUs, which power everyday devices like car window controls, toasters, remote controls, headlights, Wi-Fi modules, Bluetooth controllers, and more. I chose these processors because their simplicity and efficiency make them perfect for single-purpose, tiny applications.
Join me to see why the M-class is a great starting point for aspiring embedded software engineers like me—its straightforward architecture helps me master key concepts quickly. Stay tuned for my next video, where I’ll dig deeper into the microarchitecture and specifics of the M-class CPUs!
