The night attack on the Moltkebrücke (Moltke Bridge) on 28–29 April 1945 was one of the most dramatic episodes of the Battle of Berlin. After bloody daytime assaults failed to secure the crossing, Soviet commanders ordered a renewed attack under cover of darkness. Assault detachments from the 150th and 171st Rifle Divisions crept forward amid smoke, artillery fire, and the glare of powerful searchlights meant to blind German defenders on the far bank. The bridge was swept by machine-gun and anti-tank fire from SS and naval infantry positions dug into the Ministry of the Interior and nearby ruins, turning the span into a narrow killing ground. Soviet engineers and infantry advanced in small groups, dragging wounded aside while pressing forward under relentless fire.

By the early hours of 29 April, Soviet troops finally established a foothold across the bridge, supported by tanks and assault guns firing at point-blank range from the eastern bank. Once the crossing was secured, Red Army units rapidly expanded the bridgehead, breaking into the government quarter and opening the direct route to the Reichstag only a few hundred meters away. The Moltke night attack encapsulated the final battle for Berlin: brutal close-quarters fighting, symbolic terrain, and enormous casualties for minimal ground gained. Its success made the subsequent assault on the Reichstag possible and marked the irreversible collapse of German defenses at the heart of the capital.
