If swans, romantic bridges, canals and beautiful old buildings are your thing, then this is for you!.
Welcome to our channel, where will take you through the top 5 most romantic bridges in Bruges.
When most people think about Bruges, one of two things undoubtedly comes to mind:
cruising under romantic bridges with swans in the distance, or the iconic film “In Bruges”.
True to the infamous words of the character Harry Waters in the movie, it is a fairytale town with
its canals, more than 80 bridges and 30 churches.
One can imagine that the cobbled streets that run throughout the city keep secrets of times long
gone as they still feel the hooves of horse-drawn carriages to this day.
Now, let’s get counting down the top 5 bridges in Bruges!
At number 5 is the Augustijnenbrug, or Augustine Bridge. This three-arched bridge has been carrying everything imaginable, but most notably Augustinian frairs since it was built in 1391. This bridge continues to dazzle tourists and locals alike to this day.
At number 4 is Sleutelbrug, or Key Bridge. Dating as far back as 1331, this bridge is a slightly hidden gem in Bruges and definitely worth seeking out! Interestingly, its name has nothing to do with an actual key, but with an old brewery that used to be nearby!.
At number 3 is Nepomucenus Brug, or Nepomucenus Bridge.
You might recognize this canal area from the movie “In Bruges”, as this bridge is a few steps
away from the oldest hotel in Bruges where Colin Farrell jumps out of the window and swims away.
This bridge and the surrounding area is one of the most photographed locations in Bruges and it’s not hard to see why! It is also the start and finish point of some of those famous canal cruises in Bruges.
At number 2 is Leeuwbrug, or Lion Bridge.
Guarded by two grand lions, this bridge has a presence about it that is hard to describe. On a clear day, turn towards the Belfort van Brugge (or as we know it, the Belfry of Bruges) to see this landmark tower over ancient cobbled streets and typical Belgian houses. Bonus if you can get there around sunset!
At number 1, you guessed it, is the spectacular Bonifacius Brug, or St Bonificius Bridge.
It is no wonder that tourists flock here in hoards and that every canal tour makes this a part of the journey. This romantic bridge, right next to the back of the equally breathtaking Onze Liewe Vrouw van Blindekens, or Church of Our Lady, truly captures the essence of this romantic, historical, fairy tale destination.
