Government confirms redress for survivors of Lake Alice | Stuff.co.nz

Описание: Abuse in Care Response Minister Erica Stanford has confirmed the Government will provide redress to survivors of Lake Alice.

At Lake Alice, psychiatrist Dr Selwyn Leeks oversaw horrendous abuse and torture of patients and children.

The redress would include payments to survivors of abuse, a written apology where the Government will concede torture occurred under its watch, and access to support services.

Stanford said $22.6 million had been budgeted for the Lake Alice redress.

She said survivors of abuse could opt for an expedited payment, or they could pursue an individualised payment.

The expedited payment would be $150,000.

“While it is not possible to right or compensate for the wrongs of the past, Cabinet has agreed to recognition to those remaining survivors for the torture they suffered in the care of the State. It also serves as an expression of our regret as to the many ways in which they were failed,” Stanford said, in a statement. | Subscribe: https://bit.ly/2JPg8oB
