Malaga City international Airport (AGP) is one of the oldest airports in Spain still operating at its original location. Its story began on September 1, 1919, with the first scheduled flight linking Toulouse, Barcelona, Alicante, Tangier, and Casablanca. From the very beginning, Málaga served as a vital bridge between Europe and North Africa.

During the 1940s, a proper runway was built, and by the 1960s the rapid growth of tourism along the Costa del Sol turned Málaga into a major gateway for international travelers. Terminal Pablo Ruiz Picasso (now T2) opened in 1991, followed by the state-of-the-art T3 in 2010, doubling the airport’s capacity.

Today, Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport is the main air hub of Andalusia and one of Spain’s busiest international gateways.

Located about 8 km southwest of Málaga city center, the airport bears the official name Aeropuerto de Málaga-Costa del Sol and uses the codes IATA AGP and ICAO LEMG.

It has three passenger terminals — T1, T2, and T3 — all connected and fully equipped with modern facilities such as automated check-in, VIP lounges, and extensive shopping areas.
The airport operates two parallel runways, enabling efficient management of heavy seasonal traffic.

Major European airlines operate regular flights here, particularly from the UK, Germany, Scandinavia, and the Netherlands.

The code AGP is said to come from “Aeropuerto Gran Picasso,” a tribute to Málaga-born artist Pablo Picasso.
The airport handles over 20 million passengers annually and ranks as Spain’s fourth busiest.
It houses a small aviation museum displaying vintage aircraft and pilot uniforms from the mid-20th century.
Upcoming expansion plans include extending terminal space, adding new boarding gates, and improving the train and metro links to Málaga’s city center.
