The Phantom of the Opera is a 1962 British horror film directed by Terence Fisher, a loose adaptation of the 1910 novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra by Gaston Leroux. The film was made by Hammer Film Productions but performed unsuccessfully at the box office.
For the music, British Film / Tv composer Ted Astley wrote the orchestral and "opera" score for the movie. (There was a rumour that a single had been issued by Astley of the main theme back in the sixties, and was the 'Holy Grail' for collectors of his music) but in all the years of collecting, I have yet to see evidence of it ever existing? But now after all these years I am convinced that it could be this release by Chicago's favourite society bandleader and pianist, Stanley Paul, that has confused collectors over the years? Released September 1962 in the US only. The main theme by Astley has since been issued on a Hammer Film Music collection cd, but was never issued as a Full version. I believe a vocal version of the aria was performed in the movie itself, but my memory is not what it used to be.
