In 2015, the "Rhodes Must Fall" movement emerged from the heart of the University of Cape Town, demanding the removal of colonial symbols from universities and the reform of the education system to reflect the experiences of colonized peoples. It quickly evolved into a broader movement aimed at dismantling structural racism within educational and community institutions, inspiring similar movements both in South Africa and beyond.
How did this movement arise? What were its initial demands? How did its objectives evolve after its initial success to encompass several universities? What impact did it have in building youth leadership that embraces other causes for justice and freedom, and what lessons can youth and student movements in our Arab world draw from its experience?
In this webinar, these are points we discussed in the webinar.
