If you’re an adventurous traveler who loves exploring without the stress of driving, this video is for you! Today I’m sharing my real-life experience traveling on Amtrak, specifically the Pacific Surfliner, from San Luis Obispo to downtown Los Angeles, arriving at the iconic Union Station for a doctor’s appointment.

One of the best parts of this journey — and honestly one of the biggest reasons to take this train — is the view outside your window. You get to sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery as the train travels through California’s Gold, especially the breathtaking Central Coast of California. The ocean views, rolling hills, coastal towns, and changing landscapes are truly the highlight of the ride.

Union Station itself is a destination worth seeing. It’s a large, historic, and very unique building, with multiple trains constantly coming and going — including Amtrak and Metro lines. The architecture is absolutely beautiful and has a strong Art Deco influence, which really shows its history and character. You can tell it’s been there a long time, in the best way. During the holidays, Union Station is especially magical — beautifully decorated and full of life — so be sure to check out my video to see it all.

One of the biggest reasons I love Amtrak is the affordability and reduced stress. I’ve paid as little as $20 for a two-hour trip north to Fresno. For this trip, I paid about $55 heading down and $57 coming back, for a total of around $105 round trip — far less stressful than driving, traffic, gas, and parking in California.

🚘 Bonus Transportation Adventure
After my appointment, I also take a ride with Waymo, an autonomous self-driving taxi, in a Jaguar. The ride takes me from Santa Monica Beach back to Union Station — no driver, no stress, just another fun and futuristic way to get around Los Angeles.

🎄 Holiday Travel Vibes
This trip takes place two days before Christmas, and the train is filled with a mix of travelers — retired couples heading south to visit family, people carrying gift bags and presents, young families, teenagers, and college students. It’s a great reminder of how diverse Amtrak passengers are and how trains bring all kinds of people together.

🍎 Snack Car & Comfort
There’s a snack car with microwavable meals, drinks, coffee, soda, water, and even beer, wine, and cocktails. I grabbed a fresh fruit cup for $5.50 and used a $2 coupon from the Amtrak app just for filling out a quick survey. The seats are extremely comfortable — roomy, with pull-out footrests — and much more comfortable than airplane seats. Each seat has a standard outlet, so be sure to bring your charger.

🚶‍♀️ Why I Love Train Travel
You can walk around, stretch your legs, enjoy the snack car, work on your computer, read, people-watch, and most importantly — enjoy the scenery without worrying about traffic. It’s peaceful, affordable, and adventurous. My only wish is for more schedule options, but overall, Amtrak remains one of my favorite ways to travel in California.
