July proved to be disastrous for David Zambrano, who faced multiple charges for driving-related offenses. Within a span of just weeks, Zambrano was cited for driving on a suspended license, operating an unregistered vehicle, and failing to carry insurance. On July 14, he was charged under the White Pigeon ordinance for driving suspended and with an unregistered vehicle. On July 25 and July 29, state statute charges followed, including driving without insurance, no valid license in possession, and operating an unregistered vehicle. Each offense carried potential fines and possible jail time, ranging from 90 days to a full year, depending on the charge.
Appearing in court, Zambrano insisted on representing himself, declaring “sovereign citizen” arguments and demanding to know whether the proceedings were civil or criminal. He invoked constitutional rights and jurisdictional claims, insisting the court disclose its authority. The judge patiently explained the charges, potential penalties, and clarified that these were criminal matters under Michigan law. However, he dismissed Zambrano’s pseudo-legal arguments as “jabberwocky,” pointing out that such claims had no legal effect.
The judge stressed that Zambrano could help his own case by obtaining insurance, properly registering his vehicle, and working on reinstating his license. Despite Zambrano’s repeated challenges, the court emphasized that he was unqualified to represent himself, given his lack of understanding of the charges and jurisdiction.
Ultimately, the judge scheduled a pre-trial for October 7, involving both the county prosecutor and the White Pigeon village attorney, aiming to consolidate the charges and seek a resolution. The court also instructed Zambrano to provide a mailing address and encouraged him to make efforts toward compliance with motor vehicle laws. The case highlights the clash between “sovereign citizen” arguments and the practical realities of criminal law enforcement.
