WARREN COUNTY, Ohio (Larry Davis) - It's a second chance that some people never get.
Warren County sheriff's deputies are forming a partnership with a job placement agency to find work for soon-to-be released jail inmates. The program will help inmates pay past debts and avoid re-offending.
Prisoners about to be released from jail have always got to be wondering, what next? Where do I go from here? In Warren County, the prisoners can say, "I am going to work."
There is now hope for those locked up in the minimum security section of the Warren County Jail. It was thanks to a partnership with Ohio Means Jobs; those about to be set free can be given the contacts and training to find work after they get out. The post-release employment service is being advertised on the video screens within the minimum security units. If interested, Ohio Means Jobs counselors will ask inmates about their job experience as well as what profession they may be interested in.
Some prospective employees could go directly to work or be given training at local career centers. This is a program where some employers are willing to help those who have made a wrong turn and want another chance.
Currently, the program is for minimum security inmates between 18 and 24-years-old. Jailers said in the hours since they announced the program the feedback they have gotten was positive.
