Join us on this daylong tour of the historic town of #Badagry in Western Nigeria. Founded in the 15th century, it was a hub of the trans-Atlantic #slavetrade that ravaged Sub-Saharan Africa for 300+ years.
Badagry also enjoys the status of a town where the earliest British missionaries came in contact with what's today's Nigeria, bringing with them Christianity that's endured to date. The first sermon ever in Nigeria was preached; the spot is marked by a cenotaph.
Visitors to the town will experience slave relics of various types, some family-owed and preserved for generations. In this category are the (1) Mobee Slave Relics Museum; and (2) Seriki Abbass Williams Compound (aka Brazilian Baracoon), where 100s of slaves were kept per time before they were marched down to the Point of no Return, never to see their motherland again.
The Vlekete Slave Market was renowned as one of the biggest on the Slave Coast at the time.
Other attractions linked to the town's history of slavery are managed by agencies of government. Chief of them is the heritage museum, housed in a property built in the colonial era of the 1800s.
The ultimate travel experience in Badagry is the walk on the 2.5Km long #slaveroute to the Point of No Return. Our guide on thi strip was Anago James Akeem Osho.
