MetroTV, The iconic shores of Sydney’s Bondi Beach were plunged into chaos on Sunday evening after a mass shooting during a crowded Jewish community event left at least ten people dead, including the suspected attacker.
Police said nine victims were killed, with at least 18 others wounded, after shots were fired near Campbell Parade at around 18:45 local time, as thousands gathered for the Chanukah by the Sea celebration.
“Yeah. So we're sitting on the grass and there was about six shots that sounded like fireworks, but then they didn't stop and they kept going for about two minutes, two to three minutes, about 40 to 50 shots, and then stopped for about 10 seconds. And there was just another two shots,” a local man said.
New South Wales Police said the immediate threat was neutralised following a large-scale response involving more than 25 emergency units. One alleged gunman was shot dead at the scene, while a second suspected shooter was taken to hospital in critical condition.
Police confirmed two people are now in custody and urged the public to avoid the area as specialist teams examined suspicious items found nearby amid reports of a possible improvised explosive device.
A member of the local Jewish community said the timing and nature of the attack appeared deliberate.
“Not only kids, adults, elderly people came here to see it's a kids party. Hanukkah is primarily for kids. This person who went there, he knew what he was doing,” he said
“This is like 7th of October. This is like Nova Festival in Israel. This is exactly. That's what people on Nova Festival, young people came to have fun. That's what they have experienced. Exactly the same. The terrorists came and killed them. The death came to Australia. This is a Nova Festival massacre in Australia,” he added.
Among the injured were two responding police officers and a senior media official from the Executive Council of Australian Jewry.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the scenes as 'shocking and distressing', while Israeli President Isaac Herzog condemned what he called a 'cruel attack by vile terrorists', urging Australia to confront what he described as a rising wave of antisemitism.
Australia has some of the world’s strictest gun laws and has largely avoided mass shootings for decades. Authorities say the motive remains under investigation.
