Three words. Two thousand years of prayer.
Kyrie eleison — Lord, have mercy. Six syllables that have echoed through
every Catholic Mass since the earliest centuries of the Church.
But here is something remarkable: the Kyrie is the only part of the Roman
Mass never translated into Latin. In a liturgy built entirely in Latin,
this one prayer remained in Greek — the language of the first Christians,
the language of the New Testament. The Church kept it untouched. As if
some prayers are too ancient, too essential, to be changed.
It is not a hymn. It is not an antiphon. The Kyrie is a litanic
acclamation — a pure cry of the soul. And its structure is not random:
three invocations to the Father, three to Christ, three to the Holy Spirit.
Nine words. A complete Trinity in every repetition.
And yet, entire cathedrals were built around the space this prayer creates.
In the Second Week of Lent, that cry becomes even more personal.
Not a formula — a confession. Lord, I need your mercy.

✠ ORIGINAL TEXT — ANCIENT GREEK
Κύριε, ἐλέησον · Χριστέ, ἐλέησον · Κύριε, ἐλέησον
(Lord, have mercy · Christ, have mercy · Lord, have mercy)
The Kyrie is sung in Greek — not Latin — because it predates the Roman
liturgy itself. It is the living voice of the earliest Christian Church,
preserved unchanged across two millennia.
