• Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa, the famed 19th-century mystic and spiritual leader, served as a priest at this temple and spent much of his life here, deepening its spiritual renown.
Temple Architecture
Main Temple Structure
• Built in Navaratna /nine spires/ style typical of Bengal temple architecture.
• Three storeys high and about 100 feet tall.
• The central sanctum houses the idol of Goddess Bhavatarini Kali, standing atop the reclining body of Lord Shiva, placed on a 1000-petalled silver lotus.
Temple Complex
• A row of 12 identical temples dedicated to Lord Shiva — arranged facing east — surrounds the main sanctuary, representing religious harmony and inclusivity.
• In the northeast is a Vishnu/Radha-Krishna temple with idols of Radha and Krishna.
• Other features include Gaji Tala, Nahabat Khana, Panchavati spaces, and rooms historically associated with Sri Ramakrishna.
Religious and Cultural Significance
• Dakshineswar is one of the most important Kali temples in India, particularly revered by devotees of the Shakta tradition/ Goddess worship.
• The temple is deeply linked with the spiritual life of Ramakrishna Paramahansa and Sarada Devi, making it a key pilgrimage site for followers of the Ramakrishna Mission and others.
