It is used when a strong emotion or sensation arises and cannot be suppressed in conjunction with a word that describes a state of mind or body. It's more written language than a spoken language.
It is used for actions that occur unconsciously and naturally, not for physical sensations.
(ex.気になる(be concerned)、嬉しい(be happy)、寂しい(be sad)、うらやましい(be jealous)、残念(be disappointed)、心配(be worried)、不安(be anxious) 、不思議(strange)etc.)

とても〜だ
すごく〜だ


N2に合格できるかどうか心配でならない。
→N2に合格できるかどうか、とても心配だ。
I'm very worried about whether I can pass N2.

彼女は文句ばかり言うから、腹が立ってならない。
→彼女は文句ばかり言うから、すごく腹が立つ。
She complains so much that it makes me so angry


てしょうがない VSてならない
てForm＋しょうがないand てForm＋ならないare very similar, to the point of almost completely overlapping in the way they are used.


てならない
more often used by older people, much less often by younger generations
rarely used with expressions of desire like たい and ほしい (it was more common in the past though)
It will be unnatural if you use it for words that express the attributes or evaluation of things.
–rarely used with 好き and 嫌い


てしょうがない
used mostly in casual speech
-used with expressions of desire like たい and ほしい, but less often than てたまらない
-used with 嫌い、好き


△この映画は面白くてならない。
〇この映画は面白くてしょうがない。
This movie is extremely funny, it can't be helped.

△ごはんが食べたくてならない。
〇ごはんが食べたくてしょうがない。
I can't help but to want to eat rice.


彼は若いうちにたくさんの経験が出来て、うらやましくてならない。
I extremely envy him for having so much experience while he was young.

When the baby was just born, I couldn't help but feel anxious.
