Psalm 126
Sung by the Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys
September 7, 2025
This setting of Psalm 126 is sung to an Anglican chant by James Turle (1802–1882), the English organist and composer best remembered for his long tenure at Westminster Abbey and for the hymn tune Westminster (“My God, how wonderful thou art”). Born in Taunton, Somerset, Turle began as a choirboy at Wells Cathedral, later studying in London before serving as Organist of Westminster Abbey from 1831 until his death. His music remains an enduring part of the Anglican choral tradition.
Psalm 126 (Anglican Chant, Turle)
When the Lord turned again the captivity of Sion : then were we like unto them that dream.
Then was our mouth filled with laughter : and our tongue with joy.
Then said they among the heathen : The Lord hath done great things for them.
Yea, the Lord hath done great things for us already : whereof we rejoice.
Turn our captivity, O Lord : as the rivers in the south.
They that sow in tears : shall reap in joy.
He that now goeth on his way weeping, and beareth forth good seed : shall doubtless come again with joy, and bring his sheaves with him.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen.
