Title: Meshfree Peridynamics Computations: 3D Peridigm
Instructor: Dr. David Littlewood, Sandia National Laboratories.
Abstract: Peridynamics is a nonlocal reformulation of classical continuum mechanics, based on integral equations, suitable for material failure and damage simulation. In contrast to classical constitutive relations, peridynamic models do not require spatial differentiability assumptions of displacement fields, leading to a natural representation of material discontinuities such as cracks. A meshfree discretization is commonly used in peridynamics for large-scale 3D engineering computations, due to its implementation simplicity and its ability to easily handle large deformation and material separation. This two-part tutorial will provide an overview of peridynamics and its meshfree discretization with a focus on fracture modeling and simulation. The first part will provide an introductory-level overview with demonstrations through a 2D peridynamics MATLAB research code developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The second part will focus on advanced 3D peridynamics computations illustrated via demonstration simulations in Peridigm, a massively-parallel multi-physics open-source computational peridynamics code developed at Sandia National Laboratories.
