This beach is of a totally different character compared to the other beaches I have been to in San Diego. It is quite pristine and is a protected area for wildlife. The giant sandstone boulders covering large areas of the beach are of fascinating forms and varieties, not to mention the beautiful conglomerates. Right near the entrance, however, was my favorite part in terms of geology. It could possibly be what is known to some as "Tempestite," which forms when violent storms rip up the sea bottom and redeposit recent sediments either in loosely aggregated layers or in swirls if the mud was quite soft yet. Another possible explanation, considering that these formations, according to research, are believed to have been in an undersea canyon, would be violent turbidity currents rushing down such canyons and tearing up the sediments. If you have further insights into these formations, please note them in the comments for us. Thank you. For anyone studying geology, petrology, and sedimentary rocks in particular, this is a must-see video!
