Machine translation tools are easy to use. Just paste or type your text into the tool, choose your languages, click “translate” and you’ve got a translation! Well, sort of.
Using machine translation (MT) is easy. But using it critically requires thought. In many situations, MT is an excellent tool that allows you to understand and make yourself understood. But in some situations, such as in health care where the stakes are higher, it should be used with caution.
During this webinar, we will deep dive into whether, when, why, and how to use MT. How do MT systems process information and how should you interact with MT tools, before or after the translation phase, to get the best results?
With us we have guest speaker Lynne Bowker, Professor at Université Laval in Québec, Canada, specializing in machine translation literacy. She is the author of "De-mystifying Translation" and she has been widely recognized for her work in translation technologies.
“Computers can imitate some of the work of translators, but they don’t actually understand the texts – they only process them, using techniques such as pattern matching and calculating probabilities.”
