I had the pleasure of visiting Germany’s most famous vineyard, winery and vintner. I´m talking about the family-owned estate Egon-Müller Scharzhof, managed by Egon Müller the Forth, who produces some of the best and most expensive Riesling wines in the world in the Saar appellation. Only residual sweet wines are produced at the estate and they have this very special thing in common. An incredible finesse and balance. This harmony on the palate of the finest notes of slate and citrus is certainly unique. Very few vintners are able to vinify the individual quality levels in such perfect harmony. The Egon Müller wines are all extremely storable and it is not uncommon for e.g. a Spätlese to reach its peak only after more than twenty years of aging. A small part of the winery's production is offered every year at the Trier wine auction. Müller's wines regularly hit top prices here, which also drives the demand for his extraordinary wines. Anyway, I had the great pleasure of looking behind the scenes and exchanging a few words with Egon Müller in November 2021.
