METRINO Academy Session #2
Choosing the right measurement method: a practical approach
Recorded online — Feb 5, 2026 (15:00 CET, Paris)
Duration: 1:14:32
Choosing how to measure nanomedicine products is still surprisingly hard, even for experienced teams. Different techniques probe different measurands, sample matrices can completely distort results, and “one correct value” often does not exist unless you define what you are actually measuring.
In METRINO Academy Session #2, Christian Gollwitzer (PTB) and Yuri Antonio Diaz Fernandez (University of Pavia) share a practical, experience-driven approach developed within METRINO, based on interlaboratory work and real case studies. The session introduces decision tables and heat map style guidance to help practitioners select fit for purpose methods for key measurands such as particle size, particle concentration, and chemical composition/homogeneity, including how to handle matrix interference (and when separation tools like AF4 become essential).
This session is designed to be hands-on and discussion-oriented, with live polls and a moderated Q&A.
Speakers
Christian Gollwitzer (PTB, Germany)
Yuri Antonio Diaz Fernandez (University of Pavia, Italy)
Moderation
Alexandre Ceccaldi — ETPN General Secretary, METRINO WP5 lead (Creating Impact)
Key themes covered
Why different methods can give different “size” values (measurand matters)
Measurement uncertainty and compatibility: how to compare results properly
Practical traceability paths, including top-down uncertainty approaches and reference materials
METRINO case studies: hard nanoparticles (FeraSpin R) and liposomes/LNPs
Matrix effects: protein rich media can bias DLS, and AF4 can resolve interference
Chemical homogeneity depends on length scale and sampling volume
Decision tables and heat map style guidance for method selection (size and concentration)

About METRINO
METRINO (Grant #22HLT04) is funded by the European Partnership on Metrology, co-financed by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme and participating states. The consortium gathers 20 partners (NMIs, universities, research organisations, pharma, SMEs, hospital) to develop validated measurement methods, SOPs and reference materials for nanotherapeutics to support robust translation to clinic.
